The Material:
For the lanterns you need to have a few glass tumblers that are big enough to arrange patterns on them. You additionally need four blocks of FIMO effect transparent and three to four blocks of black FIMO soft from Eberhard Faber. Depending on the sizes of your tumblers, this is enough to make two to three lanterns.
To be able to wrap the lanterns with the FIMO really equally, you ideally need to have a pasta machine. If this is not available, then you can roll out the FIMO sheets using the acrylic roller from Eberhard Faber. Further important tools: a pencil, a craft knife with a sharp point and a pair of plastic covers. You can find the template with the patterns in the cut out sheet at the back of the booklet. The modelling tools from Eberhard Faber are also helpful.

Step 1:
Using the pasta machine, create equally thin sheets of transparent FIMO and wrap each glass with this. Since the light must also shine through the finished lantern well, the FIMO coat should not be too thick and it is particularly important that it should not overlap. Ideally, the sheets should connect to each other seamlessly by allowing each edge to overlap slightly and then separating each layer in the middle with a single cut. You now remove both of the small, superfluous edge sections and carefully smooth down the chink with your finger.

Step 2:
Copy the pattern template a few times and then cut individual sections out. Arrange the paper patterns on your glass. Try out a few times to see how the patterns work best. Make sure that you don’t damage the soft, transparent FIMO though!

Step 3:
Now, use one of the plastic covers as a base. Roll out a black sheet with the pasta machine and place the paper pattern on top of it. Remember that when you transfer the finished pattern from the plastic film onto the glass, the pattern will be inverted! For this reason, make sure that you use the mirror-inverted pattern! Now, trace the edges using a pencil, transferring the lines onto the FIMO.

Step 4:

Next, cut the pattern out along the lines that you have drawn using the knife. Now, remove the remaining FIMO and leave the pattern on the film. You can also smooth down the edges or round off the curves using a modelling stick.

Step 5:
Now, take the film with your pattern and carefully place it on the glass which you wrapped in transparent FIMO. Lightly press down the black FIMO and carefully remove the film.

Step 6:
Press the patterns into place using your finger and smooth down the surface. You can also carefully smooth down edges or dints using a modelling stick here.
Step 7:
Finally, place the finished lantern in the oven to harden for 30 minutes at 110 °C. Finished! A unique, trendy lantern which will attract admiring glances – especially when you point out that you made it yourself!
